Born in Budapest in 1935, Victor Ambrus came to England in 1956 as a refugee when Russia invaded Hungary. He took part in the Hungarian uprising when a building that he and his fellow students held came under fire from the Soviets.

He spent two terms at Farnham Art College, and then went on to the Royal College of Art where he studied engraving and lithography, and gravitated towards print-making. At the age of 20, while still at the RCA, he began his career as a book illustrator. His first experience as an historical illustrator came with an assignment to illustrate a large book on the history of Britain for Reader's Digest. Since then he has contributed to almost 300 books. He currently works as the artist on the archaeological television programme, Time Team.
