Shakespeare's famous and now rebuilt Globe Theatre is brought to life with colour pictures and text. He describes how the idea of theatre developed from pagan festivals, to medieval religious drama, to Elizabethan plays.

C W Hodges studied art at Goldsmiths College of Art, London and then began his career as a designer of stage scenery and costumes. Later he started illustrating books. He designs exhibitions and paints mural decorations. He currently advises the Rose Theatre project, which is linked to the Globe Theatre.

He is a recognised authority on the structure and history of Elizabethan Theatres. He helped design the Mermaid Theatre near Blackfriars, now used for BBC drama productions.
