Ailsa doesn't trust MCC Berkshire, the mysterious man helping out in her mother's antique shop. He tells wonderful stories about all the antiques, and his stories persuade the customers to buy the items he talks about, but everything he says is a pack of lies. Isn't it? The story of Ailsa and MCC is interwoven with the stories MCC tells the customers, which range: from romances to adventure stories; from crime dramas to pirate stories; from stories set in modern-day Ireland to stories set in ancient China.

Geraldine McCaughrean was born and educated in Enfield, North London, the third and youngest child of a fireman and a teacher. She was so shy at infant school that she didn't even dare to ask the teacher's name. She daydreamed her way through her school days and then went to college to train to be a teacher.

She attended Christ Church College of Education but Geraldine didn't like teaching very much and wasn't very good at being a secretary or sub-editor because she was so vague. Luckily, she was given a job on a children's story magazine where she was asked to write some of the stories. This was something she could do well!

Geraldine now writes full-time. She loves making things up about people and places. Geraldine is married and has one daughter, called Ailsa.
