Kit Kat Chat
We had a great chat over a Kit Kat and a carton of juice this week. Sam made sure we remembered not to give away any spoilers while we all discussed what books we are enjoying and why. It was great to listen to everyone's perspective on what the smoke represented in "Long Way Down".

Time for a pose
As we hadn't yet got together for a photo for our website we decided it was about time. We all gathered downstairs and some of the girls were trying to hide behind their books but madam Longman encouraged them to give a big smile for the camera. Well the final photo is now on our webpage and I must say it is looking good.

Time to Decide
We all gathered on the comfy stools to discuss each book before making our final decision on who to vote for today. Sam reminded us all NO SPOILERS, so we were all very careful not to give anything away. It was a close call but Poet X was voted as our first place choice, followed by Long Way Down and finally The Land of Neverendings. We are looking forward to finding out the Winner of this years Carnegie Medal next week.

Web page wonders
After a long discussion, our Carnegie Kit-Kat web page has been re-designed. We went with the "La la pixie land" theme! The web page will contain blogs and amazing book reviews on the shortlisted Carnegie books. Also "La la pixie land was recommended by Conor. Good choice! By Ella

In the Carnegie Kit-Kats we all love to read and spoke about how we have 8 of the best books of the year. Carnegie Kit-Kats is a name we all voted for, maybe because we all love Kit-Kats. Sam made us all smile with his insistence that we must always remember...NO SPOILERS. Niamh - Yr7

Carnegie Kit-Kat's
Today was decision day for our group name, there were a few great suggestions but as we all have a little treat of juice and a kit-kat at each meeting then what better name to chose than The Carnegie Kit-Kat's.

Our first meeting
It was fantastic to kick off this years Carnegie Shadowing group with so many eager readers, this year's group is the largest we have ever had. The students received a bookmark and had a quick run down of each of the books and then decided which book they wanted to read. We are all looking forward to talking about what we have read next week.

Picture Perfect
The students were excited about seeing their picture on the website although some of them weren't convinced it was their perfect picture. Josh was pleased to have his review submitted to Star Review and Scott was hot on his tail to knock him off the top spot. There was lots of chat about how much the students were enjoying their books and Ben gave us all the run down on Rook.

This week we chose our web page background to update for our new group, unfortunately there was no biscuit background! A must for next year. We also took our first vote for our top 3 favourite books with After the Fire bagging the number 1 position.

Biscuits galore
Today we reached our first milestone and chose the name of our group, this was down to a new student who joined the group today who has the nickname Hobnob. After a group vote we decided to call our group "The Hobnobs"

Carnegie here we come!
We met for the first time last week. Students were unsure of what to expect so this week should see a more relaxed meeting of keen readers. Looking forward to meeting on Wednesday lunchtime to see how the books have been received.

Ready for reviews
So many of the students are talking about how much they love the book that they are reading and some are expressing a dislike to some but whatever their views it is great to discuss them. This week we decided to get some of them views in writing and all the students wrote their first review. We also took some time to design our webpage by having a vote for the way our page looks, this amongst eating chocolate biscuits and drinking juice made our meeting whizz by.

The winner announced at DPHS
There was joy in the LRC as "Buffalo Soldier" was announced as the winner of the Carnegie Awards. Some students were not as overjoyed as they wanted "More Than This" to be their winner. We are sad that next week will be our last gathering but a fairwell party will be on the cards for next Wednesday.

We're back for another amazing year of DPHS's Carnegie Shadowing Group, and we're all very excited!

We started off by deciding on a group name, and after a slightly slow start to the vote we settled on 'Debden Shadow Knights' (passionately suggested by Sam!)

After introductions and a quick discussion about what we have read so far, it seems that 'The Wall', 'Blood Family', and 'All The Truth That's In Me' are our most popular reads so far. (There have been requests for 'Blood Family' to come with an age limit because of the amount of swearing in it, but there was a bit of dispute over this...)

Next week we're looking forward to taking our group photo, and really getting the discussion underway!

The Final Countdown!
Today was the big day - we decided which was our Carnegie winner! 'Weight of Water' won with a landslide seven votes. Asher picked the following poem as his personal favourite from the story:

"Mama is alive again, A little bit alive.

She isn't singing.

But now and then she Hums

Without meaning to."

Our second and third places were awarded to 'Midwinterblood' and 'Code Name Verity', respectively. We all thought they were exciting, well-written stories, and we thoroughly enjoyed reading them.

After casting our votes we decided on a new poll question (see our homepage to vote!) and two new favourite quotes:

"What if the football hadn't gone over the wall?" - 'Maggot Moon' (Chosen by Manpreet)

"I followed you." - 'Midwinterblood' (Chosen by Stephanie)

Videos and Water
(This blog is two weeks late, but better late than never!)

This week we spent a while discussing the books we've been reading. So far 'The Weight of Water' is proving to be one of the most popular books. A couple of people (including Madam Longman and Madam Fonda!) have both said they loved the book, especially the way the story is told through a series of short poems.

We also watched some of the author videos, so we could better understand the background of the books. After we had watched the videos we decided we should have a poll question each week. See our home page for updates!

Quotes of the week:

"Your deeds are your monuments." - Wonder (Chosen by Amy, Sophie and Caitlin)

"How do you eat an elephant? Bit by tiny bit." - Maggot Moon (Chosen by Dominic)

The Biscuit Monster
We met for the second time last week. Daniel the Biscuit Monster was out in force (we might have to start keeping a tally about how many he gets through...!) Everyone was very happy to discuss their books so far. Most people were thoroughly enjoying their books, but there were a couple of mixed reviews about one or two titles. We also had a heated discussion to design our homepage, and are all finally happy with the design. Watch this space for any changes! Madam Fonda

Ready for reading
We met for the first time last week and I was so pleased with how eager the students were to choose their books. Carnegie Shadowing is by far my favourite activity of the year. I am looking forward to seeing the students next week so we can "funk up" our page together. Mrs Longman - LRC Manager

End of the year
Now that the year and the group is coming to a end, we decided to add a few comments from our students: "We had fun, especially when everyone spammed on the poll question "Is trash really trash" - Petrit "The group was awesome because we had cookies" - Shama "There was fun and joyful members in the group" - Dominic "The group was amazing and I'm going to miss getting together" - Danny Its been a good year and everyone is looking foward to it next year! Goodbye!

Dynomo's decorate webpage
We gathered in the LRC this week and decided to funk up our webpage. Aiden from Yr9 took charge and all the students voted on what they would like on our page and we were all happy with the results. After tucking into mini doughnuts and juice we voted on which question to chose for "Our Poll" and all voted. We are looking forward to seeing how many votes have been cast.

Shortlisted books ordered
Well it is great to have the shortlisted books ordered and a list of students who are much awaiting there arrival. The group will be meeting together for the first time as soon as the books arrive. The only problem I have is which book to read first!
Posted on: 23 Apr 2012

Who wins????
Well we are all waiting to find out the results of who has won the medal this year. It was hard choosing a winning group book as we were all passionate about what we have read. We had to take a group vote to decide. Looking forward to our next group meeting next week.

Photo finally posted!
I have posted our group photo on our web page today. Not all of 0our group members were present for the photo so I may post another at a later date. We have officially "funked up" our page and we are all very happy with the results.

Debden Dinosaurs discuss
We met for the second time yesterday and the group were excited about discussing what they had read so far. We have all been taken by surprise at how much we have enjoyed some of the books we may not have chosen usually. We got a chance to add some reviews to the website. We also took a picture of the group which should be on the website shortly.
