Some of us have already read some of the shortlisted books for this year so they shared their reviews and what they thought, without giving away any spoilers of the plot. Most of us had read either Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth, The Bone Sparrow or The Smell of Other People's Houses and we all had different views of the books. We then read through the book trailer competition and shared our ideas for what book we could base it on and how we could share the books qualities without giving away the plot. After we had decided we were going to focus on The Bone Sparrow we split ourselves up into the roles and began talking about the characters personality and how we could silently portray them in the video. We are really excited to start videoing our book trailer in our next gathering, time to get practising!!!

Today we went through the Carnegie shortlist and gave out prizes to everyone who guessed one of the books correctly from last session. We discussed the judges and what books we thought each would prefer due to their background given. We also had a look at the extracts and gave our views as well. Some people had already read the shortlisted books and so gave their view point on what happened. We also were introduced to the pitch competition and bounced our ideas about what each person could do for that. To conclude, we are very certain, at the moment, that either Bone Sparrow or Sputnik's guide will go through due to both the history behind them and the way they capture the attention of the reader in the first few lines.

A great start to shadowing!
Our first shadowing meeting at WHS went off to a really good start - apart from the biscuits that went on the floor! We had a lovely mix of girls from Y7 - Y12 all with one thing in common - they love reading!
We looked at last year's shortlist, talked about the award and the criteria and then read a bit about each book on the 2017 longlist. We finished with a vote each for a book to make it on to this year's shortlist.
This is the WHS Carnegie shortlist 2017:
Whisper to Me,
How Not to Disappear,
The Bone Sparrow,
The Smell of Other People's Houses,
The Stars at Oktober Bend.
