Is free verse lazy?
In today's meeting, we discussed the free verse books that have appeared on this years shortlist. This brought up a discussion on the differences in free verse novels and poetry. We thought of many reasons the authors may have chosen to write their books in free verse, like whether it is to stand out or if it is just pure laziness. The book Long Way Down (which appears on this years short list) has been described in our group as a really good book and could be extended into a full novel. Also, we have been discussing the ages of protagonists and if it effects how much you enjoy the book. Some of us said that if the protagonist is much younger than them they will not enjoy the book as much whereas others said they don't mind. We discussed the books we have read and then our meeting came to a close.

Intro to Carnegie shadowing 2019!
Today was our first meeting back together to discuss the new short list. We had a look at all the books (some more familiar and some completely new) and had a discussion about the similarities in some and predictions of what would make it from the long list and onto the short list. Very excited to continue our sessions in the library and even more excited to read all of the books!

Lots of debate today - should Tinder be in both awards? Illustrations don't make a book childish that much we agree on!

Mr Dog Bites!
A couple of the Shadowers have been surprised by the use of bad language in this book - should it have been included? Should shortlist books come with an age rating?
There are challenging references in Buffalo Soldier as well - What do you think?

Judge A Book By It's Cover?
Looking only at the covers, we each picked which book we think will win the Carnegie Medal. We put our guesses into a sealed envelope to be opened on 22nd June. Anyone who picked the winner will get a small prize but will the books meet our expectations?
