Dana, Fully Booked
Beyond the Bright Sea
I don't know quite what to write about this book. I found reading it very more-ish in that I really looked forward to reading it each night and it was a great escape to another world which was well drawn. But looking back on reading Wolf Hollow on last year's short list, I don't think this book is as good.
The characters bordered on the phantasmagorical and while their emotions were believable - Crow wanting to find her family, Osh as a refugee seeking asylum, and Miss Maggie as an all round good person - the characters themselves were not realistic. Mouse the cat summed it up for me. There were many occasions when she didn't behave as cats do. None of my many cats over the years would have gone anywhere near water or played on a beach near an ocean. I've never seen a cat on the beach either.
Comparisons to To Kill a Mockingbird do not ring true. The characters of that book were outsiders in the community, but although different, they were utterly believable.
I don't think Wolf Hollow received the accolades it deserves and I hope that there are more books to come as Lauren Wolk is an excellent writer
