Mrs B, The Scary Librarian Reading Emporium

Long Way Down

Long Way Down is written in free verse so it's a book you can read relatively quick. The verses are aesthetically pleasing and may also appeal to the most reluctant of readers.

The book centres around Will and his goal to avenge his brothers fatal shooting. It takes the reader on a journey down into Will's life and Will's reality, somewhere on the streets of an American city. You meet other people close to Will who tell their story and how The Rules may backfire.

Jason Reynolds is quoted in the sleeve as wanting to "...not write boring books." For me, the book was ok and I liked the concept but it became a bit too predictable fairly quickly and while I get the message - and it's a powerful one - I did get a bit bored. I wanted to see what the outcome would be but that too was predictable. Maybe this book is too far from my life and my reality? I DID like Will and I DID relate to his hunger for revenge.

Enjoyable but not as moving as I had expected.
