A Skinful of Shadows

A Skinful of Shadows by Frances Hardinge was an extremely complex novel with an intricate plot. Despite the powerful conflict between powerful families and poorer people, I felt that it was too complex for a children's book and I found it hard to engage with, as there were numerous characters. Overall, I found this story line to be too confusing with the constant building and expansion of the plot. Additionally, I believe that the addition of ghosts and superstitions into the already bewildering plot meant that it was taken less seriously and was not an accurate historical fiction novel. Contrary to this, I think that the characters were rich in context and their backgrounds intertwined with each other creating the intricate plot. Also, the novel cleverly involves themes of religion, aristocracy, social division and the division of good and evil. Although the book delves into many themes, which were well executed throughout, I think that this would be too confusing for numerous readers, particularly younger readers; therefore, I would recommend this novel to older readers, as they will have a better grasp on the plot and the significance of the themes.
