Ruby, Deptford Dazzlers

The House with Chicken Legs

This book is written by Sophie Anderson and was based on a Russian fairy tale. To begin with, when I first started reading it, I didn’t really get the concept and found the beginning a bit boring to be honest. However, as I read on I began to understand the book and enjoy it more. It is about a girl called Marinka who lives with her grandmother (Baba Yaga) and her jackdaw, Jack, in a walking house. It was her grandmothers job to guide the dead as she was the guardian of souls; it was a very important job so their house moved around in order to do this meaning Marinka didn’t have any friends. Whilst reading the book I often found that I was saying to myself 'Marinka don’t do that, that’s stupid' or 'Marinka that was the wrong thing to do'. I also thought that at times she could be very self -centered and didn’t think about others. I liked how her house developed into a proper character over the course of the book and you began to understand its emotions.
