James, Sheldon Shadowers

A Skinful of Shadows

A Skinful of Shadows was an excellent book, using rich description and vivid imagery to convey the horrors of the English Civil War and of Hardinge’s imagination. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who is interested in an alternate history where people become possessed by ghosts.

The plot follows a young girl called Makepeace who becomes possessed by the spirit of a bear. This, at first, seems like a curse but when she is sent to her father’s family, Makepeace uncovers a dark secret. She then realises that a slightly temperamental but loyal and strong bear is far better than the crafty manipulative dead ancestors of her father’s family. Makepeace attempts to escape into a country ravaged by war but is constantly pursued by incarnations of her worst nightmares - ghosts.

I really enjoyed this book, finding it gripping and hard to put down. You are always left guessing what will happen next! This gets 5 stars from me!
